How it works
Eight discs, like poles facing, sealed in the tube. No coil spring. The carrier wades into a field that gets stiffer as the magnets close.
This is the lab unit that showed a magnetic buffer could cycle a gun without a steel spring. It is not what ships from PAMAX.
The stack is sealed so grit and oil never become the wear surface. There is no spring to take a set — on the prototype. Commercial hybrid units keep a tuned spring for return energy.
For coaxial discs the axial force scales with area and roughly 1/gap² in the working range. That curve is why a magnetic buffer can feel soft at the shoulder and still stop the carrier without a bang.
